[EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW] with Can’t be blue

We were lucky enough to catch up with Can't Be Blue before they headed to Italy. Despite their busy schedule, they took the time to answer a few questions ahead of their big performance. By the time you're reading this, they'll have already taken the stage as the opening act for Ateez at Rock in Roma. Here's what they had to say~

How would you describe Can't Be Blue to someone hearing about you for the first time?

A. We're a five-piece band with a bit of melancholy running through us — real instruments, real songs we wrote ourselves, and hopefully something like a channel for people to let out their own melancholic feelings.

Which song would you recommend as the perfect introduction to your music, and why?

A. Probably "should be you" — it captures the musical direction we're going for better than almost anything else we've written.

Has there been a moment when you thought, "Is this really happening"?

A. Definitely finding out we'd be opening for ATEEZ at Rock in Roma — going from a tiny club room two years ago to a festival stage like that still doesn't feel fully real.

Has there been a concert or fan interaction that left a lasting impression on you?

A. Honestly, our very first show still stays with us — a 40-seat venue with three people in the audience. And more recently, our first sold-out headline show in Taiwan, realizing people outside Korea already knew our songs well enough to sing them back to us.

If each member could describe the band in just one word, what words do you think would come up?

A. We'd probably each pick something different, but if you asked us directly, words like melancholy, regret, longing, and honesty would probably come up.

What's something fans might be surprised to learn about the band behind the scenes?

A. Early on, we made everything ourselves — even our own merch, by hand. It was basically a cottage industry run by five people. We've got more help behind the scenes now, but we still write every song ourselves.

We know you've collaborated with Han from Stray Kids — is there any other artist you'd like to collaborate with? Why?

A. We're open to artists across genres — we'd love to work with mainstream names like Billie Eilish, Justin Bieber, or The Weeknd. We're curious what kind of song would come out of our melancholy meeting theirs, and honestly, they're artists we listen to regularly ourselves.

A fan wants to know: what was it like to work with Han and create such a great song together?

A. At first we sent HAN "blue daisy," the track we made with Murasaki Ima, but he felt the mood wasn't quite right and asked to hear more. We worked on a few more songs and sent them over, and "can't love" was eventually the one that got locked in. He was so committed to that track that he came to our studio in person to record, and he sent us several different topline versions for the melody so we could mix and match the best parts. That's a big part of why it turned out so well.

What goals do you have for this or next year?

A. Keep growing our live presence internationally — we're aiming for festival headline slots, and yes, we'll say it out loud: a Grammy nomination is on our list too.

Can fans look forward to any new music or exciting projects in the near future?

A. Actually, yes — we're planning to preview a brand new song live for the first time at Rock in Roma. It might be a little soon after our first album, but we think we'll be back with something new before the summer heat fully fades.

Is there anything you'd like to say to your international fans and to everyone discovering Can't Be Blue through this interview?

A. Thank you for finding us, wherever you are. Everyone carries some sadness, and we hope our music can help you let it out and move through it, the way it does for us
